Patrolled by gauchos, this herd of Hereford cows crossing the Chimehuin River is returning to its home in the fields after seasonal migration to the high-lying pasturelands of the Andes cordillera. Partly covered by thorny grasslands, Neuquén is better suited for raising sheep than cattle, which remain a minority in the Patagonian region. Most of the country’s bovine livestock live farther north, in the vast grassy plains of the pampas. These nearly 51 million cows consist primarily of breeds that originated in Great Britain. The world’s fifth-largest producer, Argentina exports its beef products, famed for their fine flavor, throughout the world. Argentinians are the world’s leading consumers of beef: nearly 137 pounds (62 kg) per person per year. Yearly per capita consumption is 95 pounds (43 kg) in the United States, and 86 pounds (39 kg) in Australia, as opposed to 10 pounds (4.6 kg) in the Philippines and in China (double the consumption five years ago), and 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg) in India. |
